If you have CSSU already installed on you Nokia N900, then you would have received a notification today telling you about a large firmware update available from the Maemo 5 Community SSU. This package needs to be installed via the Nokia PC Suite. It was only 3 weeks ago that PR came out, so it just goes to show how hard the guys are working to make my Nokia N900 one awesome device.

The latest changelog says:

Added portrait background for default themes.
For the PDF Viewer, there is now support for portrait view.
Initial release, this is an open-source replacement of the camera-ui.
Take a screenshot each startup to prevent the splashscreen from missing newly installed applets.
Added tree view mode.
Initial release, this is an open-source replacement fmtx status menu applet.
Added new cssu icon.
Added new gconf key to set the number of rows.
For the Hildon Desktop there is:

Reverted improved zoom on press effect.
Added new portrait task manager (by freemangordon).
Added new gconf key to disable menu editor.
Removed portrait -> landscape rotation when launching an application (by rmoravcik)

How to install: By now I am sure everyone has tried to run the update via the Application Manager but it tells you to install via Nokia PC-Suite.

There is a simple way of course, just use XTerm.

Backup before you do anything. Use the N900 backup utility.
Before going any further, the steps below are for people who already have the CSSU Repo installed. If you don’t know what this is then please visit the Community SSU website and follw the five Installation instructions. Only then can you follow the steps below.
Tap on the X-Term icon and when open, run the following:

sudo gainroot
Ensure your Application list is up to date. In X-Term run the following script:

apt-get update
Now run

apt-get install mp-fremantle-community-pr
It will show a list of packages not needed and it will suggest some packages (e.g. hildon-tests, libqt4-dev).
It then goes on to show a list of packages that will be upgraded.
Now it prompts one with the following messge: “Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
Answer Y and it starts the update. {Note: ensure your Nokia N900 is fully charged}
It will take about 3 to 5 minutes to download and update.
You will be prompted to install 17camera-ui (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) where the default is N. I know nothing about this new version, so please choose wisely.
The installation continues briefly where one can see a whole list of (git20110302-0maemo2_cssu2) files.
The End. I would suggest you reboot and say a quick prayer.

For more information on this update visit the Community SSU over at Maemo.org or run an Application update through your Application Manager.
