What a lovely surprise I got this morning on my Nokia N900 when I saw the usual yellow flashing notification telling me there was a new update. It was in fact a new Maemo CSSU firmware update. All 19.9MB’s of it. It has been a few weeks since the last firmware PR 1.3.3.7.8, but all updates from the CSSU are welcome.

The changelog says the following (Source – Community SSU/Changelog):

camera-ui

Fixed a null related segfault.
Use camera key to close preview window.
Added icons for iso 800 / 1600 / Auto mode (fixes #12135).
Added sound effects (focus done, capture, start recording).
Fixed 15 seconds timer only going for 10 seconds.
Fixed free device space related errors.

osso-pdf-viewer

Applied fixes from Diablo CSSU: (closes #12204). PDF Reader doesn’t support internal document hyperlinks. PDF Reader needs more zoom levels between 50% and 150%. PDF Reader page up should go to Bottom of Previous Page (instead of Top). PDF Reader doesn’t use optimal screen width in fit width mode.

qt-x11-maemo

Revert to 4.7.0 + patches: (fixes #12137, #12143 and #12226) Fix portrait launching of qt applications

How to install: By now I am sure everyone has tried to run the update via the Application Manager but it tells you to install via Nokia PC-Suite.

There is a simple way of course, just use XTerm.

Backup before you do anything. Use the N900 backup utility.
Before going any further, the steps below are for people who already have the CSSU Repo installed. If you don’t know what this is then please visit the Community SSU website and follw the five Installation instructions. Only then can you follow the steps below.
Tap on the X-Term icon and when open, run the following:

sudo gainroot
Ensure your Application list is up to date. In X-Term run the following script:

apt-get update
Now run

apt-get update && apt-get -u install mp-fremantle-community-pr
It will show a list of packages not needed and it will suggest some packages (e.g. hildon-tests, libqt4-dev).
It then goes on to show a list of packages that will be upgraded.
Now it prompts one with the following messge: “Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
Answer Y and it starts the update. {Note: ensure your Nokia N900 is fully charged}
It will take about 3 to 5 minutes to download and update.
The installation continues briefly where one can see a whole list of files.
The End. I would suggest you reboot and say a quick prayer.

A BIG THANKS go to the following people.
